#314 of 365 Pirates of Dark Water Niddler

Better late than never!  It's day 3 of the Pirates of Dark Water week here on Toy a Day as part of Nostalgia November, and today's the turn of everyone's favourite monkeybird to be opened.  This is the "Orko" sidekick in the series - red, bumbling, comedic with a fondness for minga melons.

The card is similar to Ren's, but has Nidler's drawing instead of Ren.  Niddler isn't shown standing astride the logo, for a change.  The character is packed with his wings folded up, and his weapon mostly hidden behind him on the bubble.

The graphic is lifeline, and is repeated on the back of the card.  It's interesting to note that all the first wave of characters are male.  The choice of Zoolie is odd, considering he only appeared a handful of times in the cartoons.  Tula would have been a better choice of character, since she appeared in most if not all of the series.

Thanks to the wings and tail, the monkeybird comes with 8 points of articulation., three more than usual  The sculpt is detailed with the featers sculpted onto the wings and the fur on the body and the neck.  The paint is good, and there is little slop.  The one thing about the sculpt though is tthat the monkey bird is bow-legged and he can only stand with the help of the tail being on the ground.

Niddler is slightly bigger than Ren, which is interesting considering that he was also shown as being the size of a large monkey on the series, and thus smaller than Ren.  I've no complaints there though as the bigger Niddler with the colourful wings definite stand out on display!  Yes, these are going on to a temporary November display since I've been so pleased with the first three figures so far!

  1. Good review. You're right about the packaging for these toys. It was stellar. I only owned Both and Ren but I wanted all of them. After I opened them I kept the card back it was so neat.

And yes, I found Niddler somewhat annoying. Not Zak the fifth turtle or Neutrino annoying, but still...

  2. But was he as annoying as Orko?

  3. I never really found Orko annoying. I like Orko. Re-watching Filmation today, the only time I find him annoying is when he's written specifically as a child-like character. Orko wasn't a child. Man-At-Arms telling Orko to go clean his room was stupid. He was a bit goofy, but his magic was quite useful at times, and he saved the day more than once. Plus the design is very cool in my opinion.

On his world he was known as Orko the great, so he had to be somewhat competent.

MYP Orko was a different story. I think they intentionally found the most annoying voice they could find.

  4. LOL, they made Orko as annoying as they could. Did you find Lookee annoying or enduring?

  5. I was indifferent towards Lookee. He had an annoying voice as well, but he was far less annoying than a lot of other cartoon characters I can think of.

  6. OK. Different people find different things annoying, I guess.

  7. Lookee was also barely featured in the actual episodes I believe. I skip the morals at the end of the episodes.

  8. He looks a little like what the DCUC/MOTUC bird/falcon/eagle/hawk accessory would look like if it fell into a toxic vat and mutated. Nice wing details
