#312 of 365 Pirates of Dark Water Ren

It's a new week here on Nostalgia November, and as promised, it's Pirates of Dark Water week!  I've been looking forward to this for a long long time now, ever since January when I dug out these toys to be opened.  First up thoguh is Ren, the main character in the series and the son of Primus who's supposed to gather the 13 treasures of Ruel (Rule?) to prevent the Dark Water from taking over the mostly water world of Mer.

The packaging is awe-isnpiriing.  There's a portrait of Ren on the front, astride the logo with the Wraith in the background.  The colours are vibrant and the illustration is lifelike.  The back of the card has the bio, and not pictures of the other toys in the line, but actual illustrations of the toys themselves.

The same artwork used on the front is used for the bio and the cross sell.  Notice the amout of detail on the bio as well, including map sketches of the Wraith and the Maelstrom and the maplike motifs.

The figure himself is ordinary - the usual 5 points of articulation.  The paintwork is good but not spectacular, with the black paint use to highlight some details in the scuplt.  The hair seems a bit too light when compared to his very tanned skin - skin so tanned and orange that it almost seem jaundice.  Ren comes with two swords and these are the jewel of the line.  The sword are unpainted, but despite that the swords are loaded with details and is lovingly sculpted.  Despite standing only 3.5 inches tall, this figure looks a lot larger and detailed and speaks of the fact that it's lovingly crafted.

  1. Nice! I used to love "Pirates of Dark Water". Ironically, I never owned any of the toys, :(

  2. I didn't even know the toys existed until a few years ago! That was the best time to get little known toys though, I picked these up for cheap MOC too!

  3. I never knew these toys existed until right now! Again, I would collect them on the quality of the card art alone

  7. Man, I'd love to have this set. Even with the lack of articulation, the nostalgia is a huge draw for me.

  8. It's not a huge 80s cartoon, or else you might see a revival these days...
