#243 of 365 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Ray Fillet

It's the last day of the month, but Animated August continues next month as Super Screened September, where I open toys with links to both cartoons and movies.  And today, it's the start of a mini-TMNT run, I'm starting with Ray Fillet because, he's, like Orko, and has a colour change feature.  He reminds me somewhat of Jet Ray though, which is weird.  I guess I've been watching too much Ben 10 Alien Force lately.

Ray Fillet is probably one of those figures that would have never been produced, if not for the craziness surrounding the Turtles in the early 90s.  The packaging shows an individualised front of the card with a clear bubble and Ray packaged with is acessories higly visible.  The back follows the typical Playmates design with the bio at the bottom, the other figures in the line on the top and the accessories and action features near the middle.

My Ray's leg fell apart after I opened the package.  I guess the plastic degraded after almost 20 years of being in the package.  That's not good.  Ray comes with 3 accessories, a starfish, a harpoon and a creature of sorts.  All of them are a blob of plastic with some details in the moulds, but otherwise, it's boring.  Ray can hold the 2 accessories that's designed to be held though, so that's good.

Ray's sculpt is actually quite fun - from the toothy grin and his funny face, to the flippers on his feet and the "winged" cape on his back.  The paint on this figure was immaculate, and gave quite a bit of details to the character.  The painted bit on his torso is lighter than usual because of the colour change feature - which still works after all these years.  I didn't play with the articulation on the figure after the leg broke, but basically, he comes with swivel head, shoulders and elbows and ball hips.

Ray shows his perigree as a comic character, with his zaniness and his grinning mien.  He holds up well when placed next to the other Playmates turtles and the other figures in the line.  I'm not a huge turtles fan though, so back in the box he goes.

  1. I remember him from the TMNT comics that were printed by Archie. He was the leader of the Mighty Mutanimals or some such crap.lol

  2. LOL, Mighty Mutanimals? Mutagen must have been really popular in that universe.

  3. That grin does a rather good job of capturing the manic look on the card art

  4. I like the way the grin is painted on the figure as well. This entire line is just too wacky.

  5. That sucks that his legs broke. :( I always saw that figure around (I don't think I own him...), but I NEVER knew he colour changed!

Also...his grin terrifies me to my very soul. lol

  6. Well, he does change colour, but the colours are not as bright as they could have been. Maybe it's just faded with age.

  7. Hmmm...that could be. I just hope my SDCC Orko doesn't get ruined in the future. I would cry. :(

  8. The SDCC Orko uses a different method. The colour is actually moulded into the plastic, so hopefully it'll last longer.

  9. I love Ray Fillet. Nice review Novelty.

    @Darkspecter

The original release of Ray changed colors but it stopped working after a while. I know. I still have mine. The subsequent release of the Ray character didn't feature the color change.

It's also shame that we never got a version of the Archie Comics Ray. I would really love to have that figure.

  10. Well, my colour change Ray still works, so I have no idea what you mean when you said it stopped working after a while.

  11. @Novelty.

Just that. My color change feature stopped working after a while. Of course mine saw lots of action in swimming pools which may have contributed to it.

Other than that mine is still in perfect condition.
