#239 and #240 of 365 Bionic 6 Bunji and Eric

Animated August is drawing to a close, but I still have enough stuff for another 2 months!  Eeps!  There's no theme this week, but I really wanted to get these opened and reviewed.  And just because I can, I'm doing a combined opening today so that I can take a break tomorrow.

Bionic 6 was, as their name suggests, 6 heroes, each with some form of bionics.  There was a cartoon in the late 80s for these and they toyline is probably based on the cartoon.  Bunji is Asian, and like all things Asian, his bionics enhances his martial arts.  Eric is an all-American kid, and his bionics in his arms enhances his baseball playing skills - pitching and batting.

The front of the cards are simple - the logo on the top, the bubble and the illustration.  The fact that there are illustration of the characters on the front of the card points to the fact that these are late 80s figures.  The artwork on the front of the card is well done, and is actually larger than the figure itself, so it draws the eye towards the illustration.  It also ensures that despite sharing the same packaging, each figure had a unique looking card.

Bunji looks nothing like the illustration on the card.  His head seems to be a lot slimmer and older than the cartoon.  The paint work is adequate on the face and the headband and most of the rest of his body.  The tampographed logo on his chest is nicely done.  His thighs are casted from clear transparent plastic which is a bit weird, but I'm going to guess that's where his bionics are supposed to be located.  In addition, he comes with a gun/baton thing with a sigh that mounts on his wrists.  The accessory is nicely crafted and thanks to the fact that it's mounted instead of held, it stays on rather well.

Eric has paler skin than Bunji, and unlike Bunji, actually does bear a passing resemblence to the card illustration.  The paintwork on the figure is a bit sloppy, particularly on the face.  Like Bunji, Eric has 9 points of articulation - two on each limb and the neck.  Eric comes with a baseball bat which is held and a baseball mitt.  The bat was bent out of the bubble, and I'm sure Lemonjuice will have a whale of a time talking about the bent stick. The glove is made from soft plastic and fits over his hand... like a glove.  Both accessory has some level of detail to them.  Eric's forearms are made from transparent plastic, and that's where his bionics are supposed to be.

Overall, I like these figures.  Thanks to the die-cast parts, they are heavy, and because of that they stand well.  Unless of course, their hip joints are warped, like that on my Bunji in which case they can't stand properly at all.  I like the colourful costumes, they really pop out even on a crowded shelf.  I guess they'll stay there for at least a couple of days until I have to make way for the next thing I'm opening.

  1. I always loved these guys when I was younger, but they were REALLY hard to find in my area. The only one I ever had was Dr. Scarab and yeah..he was REALLY heavy, but fit in well with my Cobra forces (not having any of the '6 heroes). Btw: I think you meant Bionic Six was late 80s, not 90s ;) Very cool cartoon, though.

  2. OH MY GOSH! This cartoon had such a short run but I remember it well! And the best part is that I liked Eric the best! So thanks for the review!

I was beginning to think I made this whole cartoon up because no one seems to remember it ard here. How could they forget! The theme song was one of the most catchy!

  3. I had the headquarters up until a few years ago when I traded it to someone. It was a fantastic playset. I remember having Eric, but not Bunji.

  5. I do! I just checked. ;) I have Meg and Madame-O. I loved the translucent parts and always found it interesting they were so heavy (diecast). I have never seen figures like them before. They were also very inexpensive, but I only got the ladies. lol

  6. @SDB: I first saw the figures in what has now become Douby Xchange. Then it was just a Popular I think...

@BBQ17: There's a playset? That's news to me. I didn't collect the line, I just picked these up because they were cheap at the time.

    @Dark: You're a ladies man :)

  7. The playset was awesome. http://www.virtualtoychest.com/bionicsix/bionicsix.html

It was built around a central hub, and you could move the various units around however you chose. I do remember that while many of the pieces on the package look translucent or vac-metallized,they didn't all match the illustrations.

I actually used this for years with my POTF figures as the Death Star.

  8. Thanks for the link BBQ17. Nope, I don't remember that playset. Must have been about the time when I stopped collecting everything except Lego.

  9. Thanks Novelty. I totally am! I had every female action figure ever made until I was about 10...then too many lines started making women, so I couldn't keep up. lol

...and DANG there's a Bionic 6 woman I never saw before.

Cool playset though! That looks like a lot of fun.

Besides the 2 ladies I own, I only remember Dr. Scarab. They had a LOT of him. Total pef-warmer where I lived. I always thought, why would anyone want to buy a gross looking, short, overweight doctor? Apparently nobody did. lol

  10. He was the main villian, but yeah, he was totally boring. He should be relatively cheap to buy these days thanks to his peg warming status. One thing that I didn't like about the villians of hte line was that they weren't very colour coordinated. I mean the herores were all red and yellow and blue, but the villians were all over the place. Not cool.

  11. You mean the villains as a team, right? Alls I knows is I like how Madame-O looks and that t'aint not bad. ;) lol

  12. Yup the villians as a team. Each individual is very well designed though, but as a team, they seem a bit disparate.
