#271 of 365 MotUC Gygor

OK, so I'm supposed to be on a JLU continuation week, but since I got my Carnivus yesterday, I decided to open him and Gygor today.  So that's what's interrupting the JLU week of Super Screened September, but that's usual, as the MotUC stuff usually intrudes into the themed weeks anyways.

Gygor came in an oversized box that's similar to Tytus's box, but isn't as big.  Gygor is posed in the box in such a way that he's framed by the lightning on the window.  His feet and arms are hidden by the title card though, and there seems to be quite a bit of wasted space above his head.  The back of the box features his bio, with a picture that reminds me of Mossman thanks to the colouring.

Out of the box, the figure is heavy, but not really that impressive.  It's just a big yellow and green gorilla with armour.  The armour is removable, and has quite a bit of sculpting, but because of the choice of black colour and the lack of large amount of paint highlights, the detailing doesn't stand out on the armour.  The paintwork, what little there is is good on the figure, including the tampographed black hand on his cape.

The figure itself is sculpted with fur, but this is hidden by the armour where he does wear armour.  There's more articulation on Gygor than on Tytus, and yes, Gygor can hold his axe with both hands.  However, the axe seems to be designed for a smaller grip than what Gygor has.  Where Gygor fails in terms of articulation is at his groin with the V-swivel joints.  He would have benefitted from ball joints there, and perhaps knee joints as well, both of which are missing from the figure.

He's tall, he's a monkey, and it would be rude to spank him to make him harder.  His helmet alone is almost as big as Orko, and he stands heads and shoulders above most of the "normal" MotUC figures.  I'm not sure whether he would fit in with the rest of the line, but that's because he's the first big beast that's not also a ride.  Perhaps when the Shadow Beasts join him, he'll fit right into the rest of the line... or perhaps not.

  2. I really want to like this figure, but it's still nothing to me but a big-orange-gorilla with a cape. Maybe i'm taking the line more serious than I should be, but...I just don't get it.

  3. There's no nostalgia factor with this figure, so he's rather blah to me as well. But I bought him on the off chance that I'll regret it later for not buying him.

  4. Somehow the "evil fighting gorilla" blurb just cracks me up. and I think the constipated expression is because he can't move his legs much!

  5. I still think it's too soon for Gygor. He should have come out in a year or two. However, I do like him. He looks cool and is well detailed, but if he wasn't from MOTU I would never have got him. lol

My Gygor also has LOTS of QC issues. The weirdest being a squished chest. Like how Mattel had problems with Bill Murray's 12 inch Ghostbuster figure having a squished head? It's sor of like that. Not nearly as bad, but still unfortunate. :( I asked for a replacement. lol

  6. LOL @ hock's comment.

I'm sorry that you got a poor quality monkey, Dark. I hope you didn't spank it too hard. It might erupt and go bananas! Heh. Sorry, I couldn't resist. I didn't even bother checking Gygor for bad paint jobs and the like. He's gonna be standing in the back of my shelf. I'm glad I didn't get 2 of him.

  7. Nice review Novelty. I love this character for some reason, and I generally dislike monkey and ape characters. The color bothered me at first until I stood him up next to the rest of the villains. He matches the horrid Simpson Evil Lyn we got. He has the same color scheme as Merman but reversed.

I think what finally sold me on the idea were the attack trolls from LOTR. I can see Skeletor using him as a big tank. FakeEyes22 compared him to a mini boss. I think that's a good comparison.

I don't know. By all rights due to my taste in characters and design preferences, I should hate Gygor; I ended up really liking him for some reason. Go figure.

  8. I think if they gave him an articulated jaw I'd have liked him better. That and better leg articulation.

  9. lol @ Novelty. I didn't hurt him. I took like 20 minutes carefully taking out my monkey. I didn't want him to get any scrapes or scratches. I had to push on him to fix his arm and play with him a bit to see if he was loose. I found out he is mishapen though.

I noticed all of this sounds bad half-way through. lol

  10. LOL, only half way through? LOL.

  11. LOL, that sounds like your version of Don't Ask, Don't Tell. LOL. It's fun making fun of Gygor.

  12. lol

Mattel's giving me the run around with an exchange, so I may have to keep him. :S

  13. Exchange? Is his head dented or is something bent where it shouldn't be? You never really said what was wrong with him...

  14. Bent helmet spike (looks like a floppy dog ear), missing paint on the back of his armour, black paint all over the back of his head, yellow paint all on the inside of his helmet, his arm was half-separated and his chest was squished like someone stepped on him. lol

  15. Well, look at it from the cup is half-full point of view - you have a one of a kind Gygor that nobody else have in the whole wide world. Just like my Green Goddess with 2 left legs!

  16. lol

That's true, I guess. I'm really peeved at Matty though. They changed their exchange policies (again, apparently) and want me to send the figures back (I have two She-Ras I figured I'd do too, because I knew I'd have to send them).

Anyway, they can't guarantee me any She-Ra replacements, so I'm not risking that...and they MUST have UPS come to a U.S. address because I had them shipped to a U.S. address...even though I explained I do not reside in the U.S...

So, they want me to ship them back at my own expense...and I explained that would be more expensive than just me BUYING another Gygor. *sigh* Mattel.

  17. Well, Mattel does want you to buy another Gygor. They suck, but what can you do? Just don't go sucking your monkey :)
