#244 of 365 Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Shredder

It's September, and I start the month dedicated to toys with links to both an animated series and a big screen release at the movies.  And what better toy to kick start the month than Shredder, of the ninja Turtles fame?  Welcome to Super Screened September!

Shredder comes on the usual TMNT card of the time - I like the multiple illustrations of the character on the front.  There's even a ticket stub near the top promoting the tie-in to the second Turtles movie.  That's a good sign.  The back of the card is really crowded - are those really all the toys in the line?

Shredder seems a lot more crazier in this incarnation of the figure.  He's all decked out in porcupine spikes.  Yeowch.  The design of the figure is also a bit weird - I mean, does those 2 blobs on the front of his torso look like boobs to you?  The helmet is non-removable, and neither are the bits and bobs that's actually moulded onto the character.  I guess I should be happy that his joints didn't fall apart.

Shredder comes with 4 accessories (Hey, it's Playmates) - a mace, a radio and two canisters of ooze.  The mace has some level of detail, and looks more like a cross between a morning star and an axe than a proper mace.  It's good and it matches this Shredder's design perfectly.  the communicator is so-so and it seems designed so that it can fit onto Shredder's other hand, but I didn't try because I didn't want the character or the accessory to fall apart.  The two canisters actually look more like dumbbells than canisters, but they are just extra, I would guess.

Despite the wackiness of the character, I think it really stands out when place next to the other turtle figures.  He's still going back into the box though, and I hope his joints doesn't break in there.

  1. I loved this figure as a kid! I thought it was absolutely awesome to actually have Toka, Razar, and Super Shredder to fight against my turtles.

Most of my original TMNT figures got sold, but I do have various accessories floating around. The ooze cans still hangaround my Duke Nukem figure, doubling as pipe bombs.

BTW, did anyone catch Turtles Forever on Nickelodeon this weekend? That movie is epic! I loved it!

  2. I watched Turtles Forever a few months ago when it was on 4Kids or whatever. I friggin' loved it! It really made me want to own the Neca Turtles. I heard Nick cut out 8 minutes of footage...not sure what got left out though...

That Super Shredder figure is pretty cool, but at the time it was the coolest thing on the whole damn planet! I remember watching Turtles II and seeing Shredder like this at the end. i never once wondered why mutagen would make his metal blades change.lol Ah, the folly of youth! :)

  3. I loved this figure as a kid! He has spikes all over, so you'd get impaled if you tried to touch him...and he had a little device I always thought was a game. I thought it was cool he played games. lol

  4. It's a communicator, Darkspecter. LOL. Hand held game indeed. Oh well, why not? In between trying to conquer the world, he could play some video games. LOL.

  7. Classic figure from a classic film. Why didn't they make a Vanilla Ice figure from that one? "Ninja Rap" was the best song EVER!

  9. That's not Shredder Novelty. It's Super Shredder from the TMNT 2 movie. I just needed to point that out. :)

  10. What's the difference between Shredder and Super Shredder? I passed on "turtlemania" back in the day and have no wish to watch the movie to find out the answer.

  11. You don't know the difference between Super Shredder and Shredder? Huh.

Go to youtube and track down Super Shredder from the TMNT 2 movie.

Shredder gets doused with mutagen in that movie and gets mutated. He turns into Super Shredder of which that toy is a fairly accurate representation of, all things considered.

He's super strong, and about 7 or 8 feet tall.

Trivia fact: He's played by Kevin Nash the wrestler in the movie.

  12. Why does he get turned into Super Shredder? If the turtles were those closest to him, shouldn't he have become a turtle? I'm confused.

  13. They weren't near him. He was holding a girl hostage and they caused a large concert stereo speaker to explode sending him flying through a window and exposing him to the mutagen.

Don't ask me why it mutates his armor too. :)

  14. I watched it, but was totally confused. And yeah, why did it mutate his armour? It makes no sense. Oh well, I'm glad I'm not a turtles fan.
