Thunder Pirates of the Carribean Cat

I'm still going through opening my Palace Guards.  Since there are more than one, I'll post them all together, but in the meantime, here's this week's news so far.  These are two of the things I am looking forward to this year.

#393 of Year 2 MotUC Goddess

I bought the Goddess way back when she was first released and wasn't too pleased with her, so after opening her, I just left her on the shelf.  Until Evil-Lyn came along, then I decided I was going to switch all the bracers (thanks to Havoc for the help there), and that's when I discovered that my Goddess had 2 left legs.  Urgh.  So fast forward to January and the Goddess was made available again, I picked up one of her and hoped that she wasn't going to be a disabled handicapped broken-into-pieces toy.  Well, check out the pictures below to see what I got.

#392 of Year 2 Lego 8803 Minifigures Space Alien

The minifig crazy that's been sweeping Lego, well, has been getting a bit infectious.  There's a number of cheats available to decode which figure is in the bags and when I was in a Lego store in the UK, I decided that I want to pick up an alien and I have to say it works.

#391 of Year 2 Lego 7749 Star Wars Echo Base

There's been quite a bit of Star Wars this month, and I thought I'd continue with this.  Echo base was the site of the Battle of Hoth, whatever that is.  All I remember is Chewie fighting those huge AT-AT (or are they AT-STs?)  Well, playsets aren't that rare in the Lego Star Wars universe though, but they tend to be a bit... wanting, especially when compared with the vehicles.  So, with that in mind...

#390 of Year 2 MotUC Buzz-Off

I opened this a while back, but since it's going into the queue, you're probably reading this a lot later than the date I opened it, which will be the standard MO for this year.  Before I go on though, I have to say that I now have a board so please feel free to hang around there and be verbose there as well.

#389 of Year 2 Lego 5866 Creator Rotor Rescue

I had this scheduled for last year, but it didn't make the cut.  This Lego set was actually purchased in Jakarta, Indonesia last year because I just wanted to get some toys while I was there.

#388 of Year 2 Dr. Who Tardis

I have to confess, I named this toy as one of my top 10 without actually having purchased the toy.  Well, when I was in the UK I rectified that and I purchased one of these - they could be found anywhere.  And yes, I know it's supposed to be the TARDIS, but I'm lazy so I'll just type it as the tardis.

#387 of Year 2 Lego 8017 Star Wars Darth Vader's TIE Fighter

In an attempt to whore to the Star Wars crowd, here's a Lego Darth Vader in a TIE fighter set review.  I must confess I love TIE fighters, but Lego has gone the route of creating so many  variants of these that they've all blurred together into one.  This one though, has Darth Vader, so it must be good?  Maybe.

#386 of Year 2 Scooby Doo Monster Pack #2

As I said, for me, all good things comes in twos, and that's not limited to Monster Packs either.  I picked up this Monster Pack while shopping with Havoc together with a levitating Dr. Who Tardis.  It was a good day for a toy haul!

#385 of Year 2 Scooby Doo Monster Pack #1

Did I mention that Havoc brought me toy shopping while I visited him?  He knew I was after these Scooby Doo gitd packs, because he mentioned them way back in January last year when I was doing gitd January.  So I picked up two of these gitd packs while in the UK.

#384 of Year 2 Scooby Doo

I'm still peppering the toys I'm opening this month with gitd stuff, in honour of the fact that last year's theme for January was gitd.  There's no theme this year though, I'm just going crazy opening toys willy-nilly.  I was in Hamleys in London the other day, and I picked up two things - a gitd boomerang, and Scooby's gitd van.

The best toy forum in the world is at...

It's Matty release day and I'm sure I'll freak out in a couple of hours.  One of the few places online that has helped me through quite a few release days is PoeGhostal.com.  The forums there has intelligent, mature (most of the time) discussions among a small group of people and I've been hanging out there more and more.  So yesterday, I asked Poe if he could create a small corner (or portion, or whatever a bit of a forum is called... board perhaps?) of the forums for TaD, since well, I don't really want to create another forum that I have to visit and stuff.  Poe, being the nice guy that he is, created the board today, so head over and check it out.

#383 of Year 2 Gormiti Magmion

Two's company, Three's a crowd.  One figure on its own in a line always feels rather lonely to me, which is why I get at least 2 characters from a line, if I'm able to do so.  Well, while shopping for these Gormitis, it was a difficult choice picking up which one of the 5 figures I should purchase and it ended up being these two, Jessica from yesterday, and Magvion.

January 2011 Matty Release day

Tomorrow will be another big Matty Release day for MotUC.  There are five items going on sale tomorrow, four of which will be from the MotUC line, and two of those are reissues/rereleases.

#382 of Year 2 Gormiti Jessica

Let's head back to the stuff I purchased while on holiday in the UK.  Gormiti is an Italian line that has a cartoon tie-in.  Most of it are small Battle Beast non-articulated creatures sold in blind bags in Europe, so I was a bit surprised to see that they do have 4-inch figures in the line while shopping with Havoc in TRU.  So I picked up two.

Pirates of the Carribean Lego box pictures

This is one of the lines I'm looking forward to.  We finally have our first view of these sets.  A Dutch online store, has got some rather blurry images of the sets.  I have to say these look amazing.  Lego could have gone the "we could care less" route ala Avatar, or the "action feature is king" route of Indiana Jones, but they didn't.  Instead they went the Star Wars route and made awesome looking sets.  My favourite is Whitecap Bay, with the light brick and the buildings.

#381 of Year 2 Lego 8409 Ben 10 Spidermonkey

Lego released six Ben 10 sets last year.  I purchased five and opened it way back as part of Jambalaya July last year.  Well, the completist in me wasn't too happy that I didn't get all six, so for the December holidays, I spent my holiday money on the last of these, Spidermonkey!

#380 of Year 2 Swampsterz Flicker

One good action figure deserves another?  Well, I actually bought two of these at ELC and was wondering if I should have gotten more since they were so cheap.  Anyways, here's the second one of them.  Just a reminder for those of you who aren't into the toy a day concept this year, I'm not opening a new toy everyday.  Nope, I'm opening them all at one go when I get the time, but I'm writing about them one a day.  So you guys are still reading about a toy that I've opened in the year... just not  necessary on the same day that I opened it.

Predictions: MotUC 2011

I just feel compelled to do this list.  I have no idea why.  This isn't a list of figures that I'd like to have in 2011.  This is a list of figures that I think Mattel will make in 2011 based on what's already available.  Mattel, of course, has made this job easy by announcing the first 5 figures of the year, with the sixth one to be announced in a couple of weeks at New York Toy Fare.

#379 of Year 2 Swampsterz Razor-Beak

I have to say Liverpool is probably one of the best place to shop for toys in England.  Granted, I did not travel the length and breath of the country to shop for toys, but of all the places I've been, it was good, with a toy store, a comic store that has toys and Forbidden Planet.  In addition, toys seem to be sold almost everywhere; even the local Lewis (a department store) has an almost complete selection of Lego AND Playmobil.

#378 of Year 2 Lego 7693 ETX Alien Strike

I saved this Lego set, because it's one of the few gitd sets that I have left unopened.  it's part of the Mars Mission line, of which I closed last year with.  The gitd figures were part of the second wave of the sets, and it's the better wave surprisingly.

#377 of Year 2 MotUC Merman

I decided to open a second of my first issue Merman to put the golden armour on him from the second Weapons Pak.  Now, I got a spare one way back when to army build because of the second head, and I'm glad that I did! Now since Merman was before I started TaD, I thought it'd be good to include him here just for those of us who's not read about him. Merman has also been reissued, but I didn't get that because well, I don't need them.

#376 of Year 2 Lego 8796 Knights Kingdom II King Mathias

It's the final figure of the Knights Kingdom II action figures, and today we end with Elvis Presley wannabe, the King.  King Mathias to be precise.  Wait, the king has a latin name, and he and his knights with Latin and Asian names go up against a Lord with a Slavic name?  Okay...

#375 of Year 2 Lego 8795 Knights Kingdom II Lord Vladek

Lord Vladek is the antagonist of the line, and true to typical stereotyping, he's black, or mostly black.  I have no idea why someone at Lego gave the antagonist a name that sounds Slavic and Eastern European, and I wonder if it has anything to do with the fact that Lego closed down most of its factories at around the time this toy was made and moved it all to the Czech republic, where there were a number of operational difficulties starting up the factory... hmm...

#374 of Year 2 Lego 8791 Knights Kingdom II Sir Danju

It's another Knights Kingdom II!  Oh noes!  Today I'm opening Sir Danju... and I'm just wondering about the way these knights are named.  Rasmus sounds Latin, Santis also sounds Latin, Jayko sounds Asian and Danju also sounds Asian.  Hmm...

#373 of Year 2 Lego 8792 Knights Kingdom II Sir Jayko

Sir Jayko is the third of the six Lego action figures of the early noughties.  Will he be any different than the other two knights that I've previously opened?

#372 of Year 2 Lego 8794 Knights Kingdom II Sir Santis

A Sir is the title given to a knight, and a knight is a guy in charge of his own army who the king (or nobleman) can levy in times of need.  These days though, the title is just given willy nilly to important people, and then there are some self confessed sirs...

Don't forget to Floss!

Mattel has just announced that Mo-Larr and Skeletor will be available again on January 10th at mattycollector.com.  Apparently these are from stock originally earmarked for Cartoon Network, so there might not be a lot of them.  The sale is in celebration of the 5th season of Robot Chicken, which will air on the 9th, on Cartoon Network, of course.  The second episode of the season, on the 16th supposedly will have a Mo-Larr skit which features his origins.  Hmm... OK...

#371 of Year 2 Lego 8793 Knights Kingdom II Sir Rascus

I think I do have more gitd stuff to open, but I thought I should get these out of the way first.  Knights Kingdom II constructible action figures.  And we start off with Sir Rascus.

The packaging is interesting.  The cap is made to resemble the top of a castle.  The base of the container isn't round or square but has a truncated triangle look.  Overall, the back of the packaging looks more like a real tower than the front.  The front is plastered with a sticker that has a picture of the action figure; the back has pictures of the action feature and the cross sell, a definite indication that Lego is trying to enter the action figure market... oh, about 10 years ago, because that's how old these figures are (and I haven't opened them?  What's wrong with me?  Oh yeah, there was TaD 2010, which put a crimp on opening figures, but this year, well, let's hope I'll get everything opened... time permitting, but I digress).

There are no baggies inside, it's just a container of erm... action figure parts.  The construction was easy.  The figure looks stiff and unattractive and too inhuman.  There are two wheels on his back which causes his arms to raise and lower when the wheels are rotated, but yawn, really?

The figure is slightly taller than a MotUC, so it's not bad sizewise, but it just looks bad overall.  Perhaps some twinkie kid will have fun with these, but as an action figure, it looks bad.  And I've got 5 more of these to to!
